I totally get the hesitation about a metal pergola clashing with a cottage vibe. I’ve been stuck on the same thing—my place is older and has a lot of wood trim, so I keep wondering if a metal structure would just look out of place. I’ve seen some powder-coated options that are supposed to blend better, but I haven’t seen any in person yet. Has anyone tried painting or customizing a metal pergola to make it look less industrial? Or maybe mixing in some wood elements?
One thing that’s making me second guess the sail shade is the wind factor. My backyard gets gusty, and I’m worried about having to take it down every time there’s a storm warning. Is that as big of a hassle as it sounds, or am I overthinking it? On the flip side, does the metal pergola actually hold up well over time, or do they start to rust or get dinged up after a few years? Maintenance is kind of a dealbreaker for me.
Also, does anyone regret not going with something more flexible? Like, if you put up a pergola and then want to change your layout later, is it just a pain to move or remove? I’m not great at committing to one setup for years on end...
