Was chatting with my neighbor yesterday about backyard maintenance stuff (exciting convos, I know...), and he mentioned he's never really bothered to look closely at his pergola since it was installed a couple years ago. Got me thinking—I'm probably a bit paranoid, but every few months or so I find myself checking mine for loose screws, rot, or any signs of wear. Not that I even know exactly what I'm looking for half the time, lol.

Anyway, now I'm curious how others handle this. Quick poll: how regularly do you give your pergola a proper once-over?

- Every few months (like me)
- Once a year-ish
- Only when something looks obviously wrong
- Um...never thought about it tbh

Feel free to share if you've found anything surprising or have tips on what we should actually be checking for. I'm kinda winging it here, you know?

We’d say you’re on the right track. A quick check every few months is a smart habit, even if you’re not always sure what to look for. Most of the time it’s just small things like tightening a bolt, making sure there’s no early rot or insect activity if it’s timber, and giving it a clean so mildew doesn’t build up. If you’ve got plants growing on it, keeping an eye on moisture against the beams is another good one.

So for your poll, we’d go with “every few months.” It’s not over the top and it helps catch little issues before they turn into bigger repairs.

And for anyone who hasn’t installed one yet, knowing how to choose a pergola that suits your climate and backyard makes all of this a lot easier in the long run.
