What cleaning can a pergola canopy fabric handle?
What’s a safe way to clean dirt or mildew from a pergola fabric canopy without shortening its life? I’d expect the answer to depend on the fabric and its care instructions, so I’m wary of assuming a particular cleaner or pressure washing is suitable.
Does the approach change much for a canopy that can be removed versus one that’s fixed in place? I’m also curious what wear signs matter most at seams and attachment points, or in areas that tend to stay damp, and when cleaning may no longer be enough.

Persistent mildew-like staining after cleaning and drying doesn’t, by itself, show that the canopy has failed. I’d be more concerned about fabric that’s brittle or weakened, seams that are fraying or separating, or damaged attachment points, since cleaning can’t restore lost strength. Those are signs to assess for repair or replacement rather than try a harsher cleaner.
