Plumbing's always the sneaky one—had a similar issue with old pipes that needed replacing. Did you end up having to redo any tile work because of it? That's where mine got pricey...
Yeah, plumbing definitely threw me off too. Thankfully, I didn't end up needing to redo the tile work—but man, it was close. When we realized the pipes were ancient and corroded, the plumber initially thought we'd have to tear out a whole section of shower tiles. That had me sweating, because I'd just picked out some pretty pricey subway tiles that I was already second-guessing (typical first-time renovator anxiety, right?).
Anyway, what saved us was that there was access from the other side of the wall through a linen closet, so they managed to get in there without disturbing the tile at all. If you haven't started yet or you're still early in your remodel, it's worth checking if there's any way to access pipes from behind or through another room. Might save you from having to redo tile work altogether.
But yeah, even without tile issues, plumbing ate into my budget more than I expected. The plumber found some sketchy DIY fixes from previous owners that had to be corrected, so that added some unexpected costs. Honestly, every time he called me over with that "you gotta see this" tone, my wallet cried a little inside...
Hang in there though—once it's done, you'll be glad you tackled it properly. The peace of mind knowing everything's updated and safe is worth it... at least that's what I keep telling myself as I stare at my dwindling renovation budget, haha.
