Did you find the wiring issues yourself, or did the inspector catch it first? I'm asking because we just started our bathroom reno, and now I'm a bit worried. Our house is from the 40s, and while everything seems okay so far, who knows what's hiding behind those walls... Your experience makes me think maybe we should budget a bit extra just in case. Better safe than sorry, right?
Our inspector flagged some outdated wiring during our remodel, but honestly, we would've noticed it ourselves once we opened the wallsβpretty sketchy stuff. With a house from the 40s, I'd definitely set aside a buffer. You never really know until you're in there digging around... Did you uncover anything else unexpected besides wiring?
Yeah, wiring's always a wildcard in older homes. Did you check your plumbing yet? Last remodel I did, we found some corroded galvanized pipes behind the shower wall... definitely bumped up our costs more than expected.

Ha, sounds familiarβevery time I tackle a bathroom reno, it's like peeling back layers of an onion (and yes, tears included). Last one I did ran me around 8k initially, but then came the "surprise" corroded pipe replacement and some sketchy wiring behind the vanity. Ended up closer to 12k all said and done. Lesson learned: always budget extra for those lovely hidden gems...

Haha, that's exactly how it feels. Did you end up doing the wiring yourself or hire someone? Last time I opened up a bathroom wall, I found some ancient knob-and-tube wiringβtalk about sketchy. Had to call in an electrician and it added at least another grand to the budget. Makes me wonder, does anyone ever open a wall and NOT find something unexpected...?
