Epoxy looks great at first, but in my experience, it’s not a forever fix—especially if your counters aren’t perfectly level. I’ve seen yellowing and some chipping after a couple of years, even with a good topcoat. It’s fine for a rental or a quick flip, but if you’re planning to stay put, it might bug you down the line.

As for those countertop paint kits, they’re hit or miss. They look awesome in staged photos, but up close, you can usually tell it’s paint. Prep is everything—if you skip steps or rush, it’ll peel or scratch way faster than you’d like. I tried one in a rental kitchen and got maybe two years before it started looking tired.

If your 1940s counters have character, I’d lean toward preserving them unless they’re really trashed. Sometimes a deep clean and some new hardware go further than a full-on cover-up. Quick fixes are tempting, but they rarely age as well as the real thing.
