Honestly, I’ve tried both and ended up with a Frankenstein setup—strips behind the TV, smart bulbs in the lamps. The strips definitely have more “wow” factor, but man, those sticky tabs never want to stay put when it’s humid. Still, way better than patching holes when you move out.

That’s the classic LED strip struggle. I’ve had them peel off in the middle of the night—woke up to a sad, droopy light snake behind my desk. If you want a more permanent (but still renter-friendly) fix, try 3M Command strips or even those tiny clear cable clips. They hold up way better in humidity and don’t wreck the paint when you move out. Honestly, I think strips are unbeatable for accent lighting, but for actual room brightness, smart bulbs win hands down. Strips just can’t throw light far enough unless you go wild with placement.

I hear you on the “sad, droopy light snake”—mine looked like it was trying to escape under the couch. I’ll second the Command strips, but if you’re feeling extra green, reusable Velcro tape works too and you can take it with you when you move. I’m still partial to strips for mood lighting, but yeah, for actually seeing what color your shirt is? Smart bulbs all the way. The strips just don’t have the muscle unless you go full disco mode and wrap the whole room.

Yeah, those LED strips are great for setting a vibe, but if you actually want to see what you’re doing, smart bulbs win hands down. I’ve seen folks try to light up a whole room with strips and it just ends up looking like a nightclub at 2am... not super practical. Velcro tape’s a solid tip though—makes moving way less of a pain.

I get what you’re saying about smart bulbs being more practical, but I’ve actually had decent luck lighting up a small office with just LED strips. It took a bit of trial and error—layering them behind shelves and along the ceiling—but it ended up way brighter than I expected. Not perfect for reading, maybe, but for working or hanging out, it’s pretty solid. Guess it depends on the room size and how you set them up.
