WHEN THE LIGHTS GO OUT MID-PROJECT: WHAT'S YOUR MOVE?
Dragging cords from the neighbor’s garage - been there, done that. Honestly, I got tired of the battery game too. Now I keep a couple of those rechargeable LED work lights on hand. They last longer and you can angle them wherever you need. For dust, I’ll sometimes run a box fan with a furnace filter taped on the back. Not perfect, but it keeps the air clearer. Ever tried working by headlamp? It’s not pretty, but it gets you through in a pinch. Curious if anyone’s found a cordless light that actually lasts a whole afternoon...
Honestly, I’ve tried a bunch of those cordless work lights and most of them tap out way before I do. The only one that’s come close is my old Milwaukee tower light, but even that needs a battery swap if I’m doing a long day. Headlamps make me feel like I’m on a weird camping trip in my own basement - never quite get used to it. Ever notice how no matter how many lights you set up, there’s always a shadow right where you need to see?
Yeah, I get what you mean about the shadows - no matter how many lights I drag out, there’s always that one spot I can’t see. I’ve tried those clamp-on shop lights with the cheap LED bulbs, but they’re either too harsh or just not bright enough. The battery thing drives me nuts too. Why can’t they make one that lasts a full workday? I’ve started keeping a couple of old plug-in work lights as backup, but then you’re tripping over cords. Is there even a perfect setup for this, or is it just wishful thinking?

Honestly, I think the “perfect” setup is like Bigfoot - everyone’s heard of it, nobody’s actually seen it. I’ve tried those rechargeable headlamps too, but then I just end up blinding myself in the reflection off metal. Ever tried bouncing a light off a white sheet or cardboard? It’s not pretty, but sometimes it helps soften those harsh LEDs. Still, cords everywhere... I swear, my garage is a trip hazard waiting to happen.
Yeah, chasing the “perfect” setup is a wild goose chase. I’ve tripped over more extension cords than I care to admit. One thing that’s helped me - battery-powered work lights with magnetic bases. Not flawless, but at least they stick where you need ‘em and free up your hands. Still, shadows everywhere... but it beats stepping on a plug in the dark.
