Honestly, I wouldn’t trust stud finders alone—mine’s been way off, especially in old houses with weird framing. I usually just open up a section of drywall if I’m really unsure. Sometimes that’s the only way to know for sure what’s going on behind the wall.

I hear you on stud finders being unreliable, especially in older properties. I’ve run into all sorts of surprises—random blocking, double studs, even old gas lines tucked behind the drywall. Cutting a small inspection hole has saved me from some costly mistakes more than once. When you were earthquake-proofing, did you run into any unexpected obstacles inside the walls? Curious if you found anything that changed your retrofit plans mid-project.

That’s honestly the best tip—I was nervous at first but making a couple of small holes helped me spot some weird stuff in my place too. When I was bolting the sill plate, I found a random old electrical box sealed up in the wall (not even on any plans). Had to reroute anchor placements and patch up after. My plan definitely shifted as I went, but taking it step by step and double-checking before drilling made a huge difference. If you’re unsure, a cheap inspection camera through a small hole can be a lifesaver.

Totally relate to the shifting plans—old houses are full of surprises. I’ve opened up walls and found knob-and-tube wiring, random pipes, even a weird stash of marbles once. Taking it slow and checking as you go is key, especially with earthquake retrofits. Sometimes I think I’m done, then find another “feature” from a previous owner... Keeps things interesting, right? You handled that electrical box curveball like a pro.

Those mystery finds are wild—marbles, really? I’m always amazed at what people leave behind in walls. When you’re retrofitting for earthquakes, do you ever have to rethink your design choices because of what you uncover? I’ve had to totally scrap a color scheme once after finding hidden water damage... just curious if you’ve run into similar surprises that changed your plans.
