Woke up this morning and noticed my bedroom door wouldn't close right. Went downstairs and saw cracks along the wall, then found this weird metal hatch embedded in the basement floor...um, pretty sure it wasn't there before. Anyone got ideas what's under there?
Haha, sounds like the start of every horror movie I've ever regretted watching alone at night. Honestly though, older houses can be full of surprises. When I first moved into my fixer-upper, I found a random boarded-up closet behind some wallpaper—turned out to be empty (thankfully), but still creeped me out for weeks.
Maybe your hatch leads to an old cellar or storage space someone sealed off years ago? Or... secret bunker from the Cold War era? Could even be an old septic tank cover someone tiled over and forgot about (gross, but possible). Have you tried knocking on it or prying it open a bit yet? I'd probably chicken out and call a friend over first, just in case something jumps out at me.
Speaking of weird house discoveries, anyone else ever find something totally unexpected during renovations?
