I’m in the middle of my first reno and honestly, I keep wondering if I’m overcomplicating things.

“Sometimes less really is more when it comes to HVAC care.”
That hits home. I almost bought one of those UV lights because the sales guy made it sound essential, but I held off. Has anyone actually noticed a difference with those? Or is it just another upsell? My unit’s only 7 years old, but now I’m thinking maybe I should just chill and stick to basics too.

Honestly, I think you’re on the right track just sticking to the basics. I’ve seen so many people get talked into all these “must-have” upgrades, and half the time they don’t even notice a difference. Your unit’s only 7 years old—that’s still pretty new in HVAC years. If it’s running well, regular filter changes and a good cleaning schedule usually do the trick. I’d say trust your gut and don’t let the sales pitch get to you.

I get where you’re coming from, but I’ve seen “just the basics” backfire, especially in older homes.

Thing is, even newer systems can benefit from a smart thermostat or a zoning upgrade. I’ve added those to a few rentals, and the energy savings were honestly noticeable. Sometimes those “extras” aren’t just sales fluff—they can make a real difference in comfort and bills. Just my two cents.

You’re onto something about those “extras” not just being fluff. I was pretty skeptical about smart thermostats at first—figured it was just another gadget, right? But after putting one in my own place (mid-70s house, not terribly insulated), I actually noticed the bills creeping down. Didn’t expect it to make that much difference, but here we are…

Zoning is a whole other beast, though. I’ve seen folks get a ton of comfort out of splitting their system up, especially in homes where the upstairs always cooks in summer. Not every house needs it, but for some layouts, it’s a game changer.

I do think there’s something to be said for not overcomplicating things if your setup’s working fine. But I wouldn’t write off upgrades across the board—sometimes they really do pay off, especially with energy costs the way they are now. Just depends on the house and how you live in it, honestly.

Funny, I used to think zoning was just for those massive houses until I walked through a split-level where the upstairs felt like a sauna and the basement could hang meat. After seeing that, it made way more sense why people go for it. Still, I get the hesitation—sometimes you add all this tech and end up fiddling with settings more than actually enjoying the comfort.

Curious though—has anyone here run into issues with smart thermostats not playing nice with older systems? I’ve had one property where the wiring just wouldn’t cooperate, and it turned into a bigger project than expected. Wondering if that’s common or if I just got unlucky with that one.
