How Often Do You Actually Check Your Heating and Cooling Systems?

Okay, confession time...I was chatting with my neighbor yesterday, and he casually mentioned how he checks his furnace filters every single month. Every month! I mean, I know you're supposed to do it regularly, but honestly, I'm lucky if I remember every three or four months. Usually it's when the AC starts sounding like it's about to take off into orbit or the heater smells a little funny when it kicks on for the first time in fall.

It got me thinking - am I just lazy or is he just super diligent? I mean, I do basic stuff like clearing leaves and debris from around the outdoor unit and occasionally vacuuming out vents. But monthly filter checks? Nah, that's not happening in my house. Maybe twice a year if I'm feeling ambitious.
