"biggest relief was no more weird smells or mystery noises at 2am..."

Ha, those mystery noises are usually the first clue, right? Sounds like you made the right call. Ever think about how much peace of mind is worth compared to just lower bills?

Haha, mystery noises at 2am... reminds me of the time I spent a whole night convinced my attic was haunted. Turned out it was just my ancient furnace having its final meltdown. Peace of mind definitely beats saving a few bucks on bills.

Twenty years is impressive, but honestly, I'd say you're pushing your luck a bit at this point. Sure, peace of mind is nice, but replacing an HVAC just because it's old isn't always necessary. I've seen some ancient units still chugging along just fine with regular maintenance. A few weird noises here and there don't always mean it's time to panic—sometimes it's just a loose panel or a worn belt that's easy enough to fix yourself.

A few years back, my furnace started sounding like it was possessed every night around midnight. Thought for sure it was done for, but turns out it was just a blower wheel that needed tightening. Took me about an hour and cost next to nothing. So yeah, peace of mind matters, but sometimes a little DIY detective work can save you from prematurely dropping thousands on a new system.

Twenty years isn't just luck—it's good maintenance and a bit of TLC. Sure, things can go south eventually, but you're right: age alone doesn't mean it's time to toss it. My parents' HVAC hit 25 years last summer, and yeah, it rattles a bit and grumbles occasionally...but it still cools and heats like a champ. Keep up the DIY checks and don't stress too much about the occasional weird noise. You've clearly been doing something right all these years.

Totally agree—good maintenance is key, but honestly, sometimes these older units seem built like tanks compared to newer stuff. My neighbor replaced his HVAC after just 8 years...meanwhile, mine's pushing 22 and still humming along (with the occasional groan and clunk thrown in for character). Regular filter changes and a yearly tune-up go a long way. But hey, if it ain't broke—or at least not seriously broke—why fix it?
