Just hit 20 years with the same HVAC—am I just lucky?

Curious—did you notice any difference in air quality after you tackled yours? I swear ours felt less musty, but maybe that’s just wishful thinking.

I’m convinced it’s not just wishful thinking. After I went at my ducts with a shop vac, a wire brush, and more mastic than I care to admit, the house legit stopped smelling like an old library basement. Maybe it’s placebo, but my allergies seemed way better too. Could just be that I *wanted* to feel the difference after crawling around in the dust for hours, but hey, I’ll take it.

About the insulation—yeah, I went for it in the crawlspace. It’s a pain, but those runs get cold as heck in winter and hot in summer. Wrapping them made a noticeable difference in how even the temps are inside, plus, less energy loss means lower bills (and less guilt about running the AC). If you’re already down there wrestling with ductwork, might as well do it once and not have to go back. Just my two cents... I’d rather deal with itchy arms for a weekend than freeze my toes off all winter.

I totally get what you mean about the “old library basement” smell. When we first moved in here, the place had this weird combo of dust and… I dunno, maybe old socks? Anyway, I finally got fed up and did a deep clean on the ducts last fall. Didn’t have a fancy shop vac, just my regular one with a long hose and a lot of patience. I swear, by the time I finished, the air felt lighter somehow. Maybe it’s psychological, but my wife stopped complaining about her sinuses for a bit, so that’s a win in my book.

Couldn’t agree more. I put off insulating those runs for years because I was convinced it wouldn’t make much difference. But after one winter where the living room felt like the inside of a walk-in freezer (even with the heat cranked), I caved and wrapped them up. Used whatever insulation was on sale at the big box store—nothing fancy. The next winter? Way more comfortable, and our gas bill dropped enough that I actually noticed.

Funny thing is, I used to think all this stuff was just “extra”—like something only perfectionists or people on HGTV bothered with. Turns out, it’s not just about comfort or air quality; it’s about not throwing money away every month. Plus, crawling around under the house gives you a whole new appreciation for whoever invented knee pads.

Anyway, 20 years on the same HVAC… that’s some serious luck (or maybe just good maintenance). Ours is pushing 18 and I’m crossing my fingers every time it kicks on. But keeping up with these little fixes seems to buy us more time—and honestly, there’s something kind of satisfying about making old stuff work better than it has any right to.

That “old library basement” smell is so real—sometimes I think it just seeps into the walls over time. I’ve noticed, too, that even a basic duct cleaning can make a huge difference, especially for anyone with allergies. You mentioned insulating the ductwork—did you notice any change in noise level? Sometimes that extra layer helps muffle those random clangs and rattles. And yeah, knee pads are underrated heroes when you’re crawling around down there. Curious if you’ve ever looked into sealing the ducts as well? Sometimes it’s the little gaps that really mess with efficiency.

- Sealing ducts made a bigger difference than I expected. Used mastic and foil tape—no more weird drafts or uneven temps.
- Insulating did help with noise, but honestly, the biggest change was in winter. Less heat loss, rooms felt warmer faster.
- Knee pads: 100% agree. Didn’t realize how much time I’d spend crawling until I started.
- That musty smell lingers unless you get at the root—sometimes it’s old insulation or even a tiny leak.

If you haven’t sealed yet, worth a weekend project. Not glamorous, but you’ll notice it.

Hitting 20 years with the same HVAC is pretty wild—definitely some luck, but I’d say you’re doing something right with maintenance too. I’ve had a few rentals where the ductwork was the real culprit behind uneven temps and high bills. Like you said,

“Used mastic and foil tape—no more weird drafts or uneven temps.”
That stuff works wonders. I used to think it was overkill until I actually tried it in one of my older properties. The difference wasn’t just in comfort, but the utility bills dropped a bit too.

Funny you mention knee pads... first time I went crawling around in a crawlspace, I thought, “How bad can it be?” Regretted that about five minutes in. Now they’re as essential as my flashlight.

About that musty smell—totally agree, sometimes it’s not even the ducts but ancient insulation or a sneaky leak somewhere. Had to rip out some 70s-era fiberglass once; the smell vanished overnight.

Not glamorous work, but honestly, these little fixes add up over time. Makes those old systems last way longer than you’d expect.
