Ever Locked Out By Your Own Smart Door?

That battery anxiety is real. I’ve definitely had that “please just last one more day” moment with my smart lock, especially when I’m juggling groceries and my phone’s at 2%. I totally get the frustration of trading one hassle for another—keys or batteries, pick your poison.

One thing that’s helped me (after a couple of embarrassing lockouts) is setting a recurring reminder on my phone to check the battery every first Sunday of the month. It sounds a bit much, but it’s become as routine as watering my plants. If you’re into organizing, maybe stash a spare 9V in a decorative bowl near the door? Not exactly pocket-friendly, but at least it’s there if you need it.

I do wish more smart locks had better backup options. The hidden key slot is clever until you realize you left the key inside... been there, too. I ended up getting one of those little magnetic key boxes and hiding it outside (in a spot only I’d think to look). Not foolproof, but it’s saved me once when the batteries died and my phone was dead.

Honestly, I still fumble for keys sometimes out of habit, even though I have the keypad. Old habits die hard, right? But I like not having to dig through my bag in the rain or when my hands are full. For me, the trade-off is worth it, but I totally get why some folks stick with old-school locks.

It’s all about what makes your daily routine smoother. If you’re someone who loves gadgets and doesn’t mind a little extra maintenance, smart locks can be great. If not, there’s nothing wrong with sticking to what works. Either way, everyone gets locked out at least once—just part of modern life, I guess.

That line hits home. I was installing a smart lock for a client last fall and decided to test the backup key feature myself—guess who managed to lock both the physical key and my phone in the van? Ended up borrowing a neighbor’s phone to call my apprentice for help. Since then, I always recommend folks keep a real spare outside, even if it feels old-school. Tech is great, but nothing beats redundancy when you’re stuck in the rain with a dead battery.

That’s the truth. I’ve been burned by “smart” features more than once—one time my lock’s app glitched after a firmware update, and I was outside for an hour waiting for support to reset it. A hidden key or even an old-school lockbox might not be fancy, but it’s reliable. Sometimes simple just works better when it matters.

I get where you’re coming from, but honestly, I think the tech’s gotten a lot better lately. My smart lock has a keypad backup and a regular key slot just in case—so even if my phone dies or the app acts up, I’m not totally stuck. I used to be all about hiding keys under rocks, but after one too many lost spares (and a neighbor’s dog running off with one), I got tired of the hassle.

Yeah, tech can fail, but so can old-school methods—keys break, lockboxes jam, or someone finds your “secret” spot. At least with newer smart locks, you’ve got multiple ways in. Still, I totally get the appeal of simple solutions when you’re cold and wet on your porch... Been there more times than I care to admit.

Honestly, I’m with you on the backup options. I used to think smart locks were just asking for trouble, but after getting locked out by a rusty old lockbox (and nearly breaking a window), I started rethinking things. My current setup: keypad, key slot, and—just for laughs—a spare hidden in my car’s trunk. If I’m locked out after all that, maybe I deserve it...
