I have to admit, the mental image of a slug hotel under a faux rock key made me laugh—been there, but with spiders. The toolbox hiding spot is clever, though. I’m always torn between “convenient” and “too obvious” when it comes to spare keys. Toolbox does seem less likely to attract wildlife or nosy neighbors.

On the smart lock front, I’ve actually wondered about the backup battery packs some models offer. Has anyone tried those? They’re supposed to let you jump-start the lock if the main battery dies, but I’m skeptical about how practical that is in real life. Are you really going to have a 9V battery handy when you’re juggling groceries and your phone’s on its last legs? Maybe I’m overthinking it.

I get what you mean about neighbors as backup. There’s always that trade-off: do you want your spare key accessible in case of emergency, or do you want to avoid a 20-minute chat about rain barrels and native plants? I guess it depends on how much you like small talk.

One thing I’ve considered (but haven’t pulled the trigger on) is one of those wall-mounted lockboxes with a code. They’re not exactly pretty, but at least you don’t have to worry about slugs or squirrels making themselves at home. Only problem is, they can look a bit clunky next to a well-designed entryway... and I can’t help but notice them every time I walk past. Function over form, maybe?

Curious if anyone’s tried integrating their smart lock with other smart home gear—like setting up an automation that texts a friend if you’re locked out, or something more creative. Or maybe that’s just inviting more tech chaos into the mix.

Still searching for that perfect balance between convenience and not having to scale my own fence in front of the neighbors...

Honestly, I’ve installed a bunch of smart locks for clients, and the 9V battery backup thing is clever in theory but not super practical. Most people don’t keep a spare battery in their pocket, and if you’re already locked out, odds are you’re not carrying one. I’ve seen a few folks stash a 9V in their car or mailbox just in case, but that’s another thing to remember.

About those wall-mounted lockboxes—yeah, they’re not winning any design awards, but they do the job. If you’re worried about looks, there are some models that are a bit more low-profile or can be painted to blend in. Still, it’s always a trade-off between security and curb appeal.

Curious—has anyone actually had their smart lock fail because of dead batteries, or is it mostly just a worry? I see a lot of concern about it, but in practice, most locks give plenty of warning before they die.

I get what you’re saying about the 9V backup being more of a “theoretical solution.” I mean, unless you’re Batman and your utility belt is stocked with random batteries, it’s probably not happening. But honestly, I’ve had a smart lock die on me once—right in the middle of showing a rental. Super awkward. The lock did beep at me for days before, but I ignored it. Guess that’s on me, but still… sometimes life just gets in the way.

I do like the idea of a lockbox as backup, even if it’s ugly. At least it won’t judge you for forgetting to change the batteries.

Yeah, the 9V trick always sounded good in theory, but I’ve never actually seen anyone use it in real life. I’ve installed a bunch of these smart locks for clients, and honestly, most folks just end up hiding a key somewhere anyway—old habits die hard. Curious if anyone’s found a lockbox that doesn’t look like it belongs on a construction site? Some of them are seriously clunky looking...

Funny you mention the lockbox thing—I’ve been on a mission to find one that doesn’t scream “emergency key inside!” Most of them look like props from a heist movie. I ended up tucking one of those wall-mounted, matte black boxes behind a planter near the porch. It’s not invisible, but at least it blends in with the modern vibe. If you’re handy, you can even paint them to match the trim or fence. Just make sure it’s still easy to access... learned that the hard way after a fresh coat of paint sealed mine shut for a week.
