Hazel hurdles definitely have charm, but bamboo screening was a lifesaver for me. My spaniel kept squeezing through the chunkier weave of hazel, but bamboo's tighter spacing finally stopped his garden adventures...plus it blends nicely with my old cottage vibe.
Bamboo screening does have its perks, especially if you've got an escape artist pup. I tried willow hurdles once, thinking they'd add that rustic charm, but my terrier saw them as a challenge rather than a barrier...lesson learned. Curious though, did you have to reinforce the bamboo at all? I've found some screens can be a bit flimsy in windy weather, so I'm always looking for sturdier options that still look good.
I had a similar experience with bamboo screens—looked great at first, but after one stormy weekend, they were leaning like crazy. Ended up reinforcing mine with some discreet metal stakes behind them, and it's held up pretty well since then...even against my lab's determined digging.

That's a clever fix. Another trick I've found helpful is burying chicken wire just below the surface—dogs hate the feel of it when digging, and plants grow right through it. Worked wonders for my terrier!
Both of these ideas sound pretty solid, especially the chicken wire trick—never thought of that one. Have you noticed any rusting issues with the wire over time? I've been using some old bricks buried just under the soil around my flower beds, and it's mostly worked...though my spaniel still occasionally finds a weak spot. Maybe combining bricks with chicken wire could be the ultimate solution? Worth a try, anyway.
