RE: Reclaimed wood or bamboo for cabinets near the sink?
A leak tray or other water-catching protection under the sink can change the comparison more than the wood label. It’s worth distinguishing routine splashes from water that repeatedly sits at the cabinet base: in that se...
RE: Reclaimed wood or bamboo for cabinets near the sink?
The sink and dishwasher area makes the cabinet-box material worth separating from the door material. Are you comparing solid-wood or plywood boxes, or mainly reclaimed-wood versus bamboo doors and fronts? A bamboo front ...
RE: When the floor starts talking: a home renovation mystery
Metal flashing is great until you’re on your third band-aid and still not done. I’ve started wearing those cheap mechanic gloves just to save my hands - makes a difference, even if they get shredded by the end. Hardware ...
RE: What would you do if your kid wandered into a half-demo’d kitchen?
I hear you on the wall damage - patching drywall gets old fast. I’ve tried those tension rods (like for shower curtains) with some foam pipe insulation around them, wedged across doorways. Not as sturdy as plywood, but z...
RE: Need ideas for draining my pool without flooding the yard
I’ve definitely had my share of backyard “lakes” after a pool drain gone wrong. Here’s what’s worked for me: I dig a shallow trench lined with gravel, then run the hose into it, letting the water seep slowly into the gro...
RE: How do you handle leaky pipes and clogged drains at home?
I hear you on the pipe dope - Teflon tape just never seems to hold up long-term, especially when you’re dealing with old threads that aren’t exactly pristine. I always end up with a little water on the floor no matter ho...
RE: How often do you actually need to clean your gutters?
Metal mesh guards are definitely a step up from foam, but yeah, they’re not a magic fix. I’ve found that if you tilt the mesh slightly (like a subtle slope toward the downspout), it helps some of the seeds roll off inste...
RE: plumbing check-up dilemma: DIY or hire a pro?
That’s the golden rule right there. I’ve had my share of “simple” jobs turn into full-blown projects, but honestly, each time I learn something new. If you’re methodical - shut off water, lay down towels, have a bucket h...
RE: Turning attics and garages into bedrooms: is it worth the hassle?
That’s a big one for me too. When I’m flipping, I always look for attic potential before even considering a garage. Here’s my quick checklist for anyone thinking about it: 1) Check headroom - if you can’t stand up straig...
RE: Natural cleaners vs store-bought stuff for appliances
I’ve flipped a few houses and tried just about every cleaner out there. Here’s my go-to for stainless: I’ll start with a dab of eco-friendly spray, but if I see that you mentioned, I switch to a microfiber cloth with a ...
RE: MY QUICK FIX FOR KEEPING THE DOG OUT OF THE GARDEN
That's a clever fix. Another trick I've found helpful is burying chicken wire just below the surface - dogs hate the feel of it when digging, and plants grow right through it. Worked wonders for my terrier!
RE: EARTHQUAKE-PROOFED MY FIRST BUILDING AND IT ACTUALLY WORKED
Nice to hear someone else had success with plywood shear walls. I tackled a similar challenge recently - had a huge set of French doors that threw off my entire lateral load plan. Ended up adding steel moment frames, and...
RE: Easy ways to refresh your porch look each season
I feel this! I used to dread porch refreshes because of the paint peeling nightmare too. Finally decided to embrace the rustic vibe and went with a semi-transparent stain - best decision ever. Now I just swap out cushion...
RE: Just hit 20 years with the same HVAC - am I just lucky?
You're definitely doing something right if you've squeezed 20 years out of it. Had a similar run with an older ranch-style reno - thought we'd never get those ducts hidden, but once we did... total game changer. Comfort ...
RE: locked out drama - what would you do?
Had a similar experience with graphite - ended up smudging it all over my hands and door frame, total mess. Switched to powdered PTFE last year, and it's been a game changer. Just puff a tiny bit into the lock, wiggle th...
