What’s the right routine for a stiff hand ratchet?
When a hand ratchet starts feeling stiff, what’s a sensible way to clear dust and old grease without driving grit farther into the head? I’m also unsure how much routine servicing should be done without opening the mechanism. Would you follow the maker’s instructions for the cleaning method and lubricant, and leave disassembly to a service procedure rather than guessing?
A ratchet that clicks but slips when force is applied seems like a different concern from one that’s merely sluggish. If the pawl slips under load, should the tool be taken out of use until it’s repaired or replaced?

For loose dust on the outside of the head, I’d brush or wipe it away first rather than blast it with compressed air, which can drive grit into the mechanism. Then follow the maker’s guidance for any lubricant or routine service; cleaning the exterior doesn’t mean the internals need opening. If the ratchet slips under load, I wouldn’t keep using it until it’s repaired or replaced.
