Cheap tricks for boosting humidity at home?

Been dealing with dry air lately, and I'm torn between two ideas: putting bowls of water near the heater or hanging damp towels around the room. Bowls seem easier, but towels might evaporate faster? Not sure if either actually makes a noticeable difference, you know. Anyone tried these methods and noticed one working better than the other?
