How much walkway room does a kitchen island really need?

How do you tell whether a narrow gap around an island will be merely snug or a daily traffic bottleneck? The clear distance to the opposing cabinets matters, but I’m unsure how much the answer changes when a dishwasher or oven door opens into that same route.

I’m also wondering how to account for people passing through while someone’s cooking. Is there a practical way to judge the layout from those measurements and likely traffic patterns before deciding whether to shrink or shift the island?

Treat the open-appliance case as a separate traffic state, not just a smaller clearance measurement. Compare the route with everything closed, then with each door open and someone standing there to use it. If a passer can’t get through without making either person move, that’s a real bottleneck. Shifting the island may improve one side, while shrinking it can widen both; which helps more depends on the clearances on each side.
