I’m with you on the storage vs. style thing - nothing like a stubbed toe to make you rethink priorities. But honestly, even when I add “wow” pieces, it’s the little upgrades like soft-close drawers that get the most love. Still, I can’t resist a statement tile or some weird hardware now and then. Has anyone actually pulled off one of those hidden pantries that look like a wall? Always wondered if they’re more trouble than they’re worth...

Has anyone actually pulled off one of those hidden pantries that look like a wall? Always wondered if they’re more trouble than they’re worth...

Had a client who wanted one of those “invisible” pantry doors - looked slick in the renderings, but honestly, it was a pain to get right. The hinges and alignment have to be perfect or it just looks off, and if you ever need to get behind the wall for plumbing or electrical, good luck. Maintenance is a headache too if the door starts sagging.

I get the appeal, but I’d rather have a solid walk-in with a regular door. Function beats form most days. Curious though - has anyone tried those corner drawers? They look clever but I’m not convinced they’re actually practical.

Corner drawers are one of those things that look genius in photos but get weird in real life. I put a set in during a flip last year - honestly, they held less than I expected and the mechanism felt clunky. Lazy Susans still win for me, even if they’re old school.

I get what you mean about corner drawers...they look super clever in those Pinterest shots, but once you actually use them, it’s like, where did all my storage go? I installed a set for a client a while back and they were stoked at first, but after a few months, they admitted the drawers felt awkward and couldn’t fit any of their big pots. Lazy Susans might not be flashy, but they’re reliable - and honestly, spinning stuff around to find your spices is kind of fun.

Have you tried any of those pull-out corner units with the kidney-shaped trays? They’re supposed to be a step up from the old-school Susan, but I’ve only seen them in showrooms. I’m curious if they’re actually practical or just another “looks great in theory” situation.

Kitchen Redesign Adventure: Worth the Hype or Not?

Not gonna lie, I was tempted by those kidney-shaped pull-out trays when we redid our kitchen last year. They looked like something out of a Bond villain’s lair - super slick. But after poking around in a friend’s house who actually had them, I realized they’re not all they’re cracked up to be. The trays move smoothly, sure, but you still end up playing Tetris with your cookware, and anything tall or weirdly shaped just doesn’t fit right. Plus, if you forget to push them back in all the way, you’re guaranteed a shin bruise.

Honestly, I ended up sticking with the old-school Lazy Susan in my 1920s kitchen. It’s not glamorous, but at least I can cram a ridiculous amount of stuff in there without worrying about fancy mechanisms breaking. Maybe it’s just me, but sometimes the “boring” solution wins out over the Pinterest-worthy ones... especially when you’re storing grandma’s soup pot that weighs more than your dog.
