What would you do if your kitchen reno budget doubled overnight?
If I had double the budget, I’d focus on stuff that actually makes life easier day-to-day. Pull-outs are great in theory, but I’ve seen them just collect dust in older homes - especially if they’re tucked away in weird corners. I’d rather have deep drawers for pots and pans, and maybe a proper pantry cabinet. Soft-close hinges are worth every penny, though. As for compost bins, learned the hard way: if you don’t empty them often, no liner in the world will save you from that smell...

Can’t argue with you there - soft-close is basically the kitchen version of living in the future. I swear, once you get used to it, going back to regular cabinets feels like slamming car doors on purpose.
I’m with you on deep drawers over pull-outs. Had one of those corner pull-out things once and all it did was eat Tupperware lids and my patience. Deep drawers for pots and pans are a game changer, especially if you’re not into crawling into cabinets like some kind of kitchen spelunker.
About the compost bin... yeah, learned that lesson too. Nothing like opening it up after a “forgotten” weekend and getting hit with Eau de Rotting Veggie. Makes you question your life choices.
Curious though - if you had extra budget, would you splurge on fancy appliances or stick to cabinetry upgrades? I keep eyeing those built-in coffee makers but can’t decide if they’re genius or just another thing waiting to break.

Honestly, I’d skip the built-in coffee maker. My friend has one and it’s always needing some kind of maintenance. Plus, if you ever want to upgrade your machine, you’re stuck with whatever’s built in. I’d rather put extra budget into better lighting or a bigger pantry - stuff that actually makes life easier every day. Appliances come and go, but good storage is forever.
Couldn’t agree more about storage and lighting being better investments. Built-in coffee makers look slick, but in my experience, they’re a pain when it comes to repairs or resale. I’ve seen buyers get turned off by weird built-ins that feel dated after a few years. If my reno budget doubled, I’d go for custom cabinets or maybe splurge on a walk-in pantry - stuff that actually adds value and makes the space work better long-term. Coffee gadgets come and go, but a killer pantry? That’s something people remember.
- Totally with you on storage - custom cabinets are a game changer.
- I’d probably throw some of that extra cash at a big island with drawers for days.
- Not sure about built-in coffee stuff either... had one at my last place and it was more hassle than it was worth.
- Lighting’s underrated too. Layered lighting makes the whole space feel bigger and more inviting.
- Walk-in pantry? Dream scenario. That’s the kind of upgrade you never regret.
