Digging deep: adventures in getting your garden dirt-ready
Was out back yesterday, wrestling with a stubborn patch of earth that just refused to cooperate. Got me thinking - imagine you're prepping soil for a magical garden, but each technique unlocks a different enchantment. Um, how would that go?

Soil type changes the priority. With clay, wait to dig or till until it crumbles instead of smearing; working it wet can leave dense clods. Sandy soil drains quickly, so mature compost can help it retain water and nutrients. In short: protect clay’s structure, and help sand hold on to resources.
