Smart lights vs smart switches for yard setup?
Ended up with one bulb that glowed like a haunted lantern and another that just… didn’t.
That haunted lantern vibe is way too real. I tried a couple of “weatherproof” smart bulbs last fall - one started flickering like it was auditioning for a horror movie, and the other just gave up after the first rain. Not sure if it’s the humidity or what, but they never seem to last outside as long as the packaging claims.
Here’s what I’ve noticed after a few backyard projects:
- Smart switches are just more forgiving outdoors. You can use regular outdoor-rated bulbs, and if someone flips the switch manually, you don’t lose all control.
- Smart bulbs outside are finicky. Even the ones labeled “outdoor” seem to struggle with condensation or temp swings.
- If you’ve got covered fixtures or enclosures, sometimes that helps - but then you run into WiFi signal issues, especially at the far end of the yard.
I do like being able to change colors for parties or holidays, which is harder with switches unless you go all-in on RGB floodlights. But honestly, reliability wins out for me most days.
Curious - has anyone tried those low-voltage landscape lighting kits with smart controllers? I keep seeing them pop up in ads but haven’t pulled the trigger yet. Wondering if they’re any better than smart bulbs for weather resistance...

Couldn’t agree more on the switches - way less hassle (and cheaper long-term). I’ve been eyeing those smart landscape kits too. My worry is the same as yours: they look slick in ads but I can’t tell if they’re actually built for real weather or just “light drizzle and wishful thinking.” Has anyone here found a brand that doesn’t eat up your budget but still survives a couple seasons? Would love to hear if there’s something that won’t conk out after one Midwest winter...
I hear you on the Midwest winters - those are no joke. I tried a “weatherproof” set last year and by February, half the lights were toast. Honestly, sticking with switches and regular outdoor bulbs has saved me a lot of headaches (and cash). The fancy kits look cool but I’m not convinced they’re worth the gamble, at least not for our climate. Maybe tech will catch up eventually...
Yeah, I’ve seen a lot of those “weatherproof” smart lights fail way too soon out here. I’ve swapped out more busted fixtures than I can count. Honestly, a good old outdoor-rated switch and regular bulbs just hold up better in these temps. The tech’s cool, but until they make something that can handle the freeze-thaw cycles, I’m not risking my time or money.
- Totally get where you’re coming from - those “weatherproof” claims don’t always mean much once winter hits.
- I’ve had better luck with smart switches too, especially since you can just use any bulb you want and swap them out as needed.
- One thing I do like about smart bulbs is the color options for parties or holidays, but yeah, not worth it if they’re dying every season.
- Has anyone tried those newer low-voltage outdoor smart systems? Wondering if they handle the cold any better or if it’s just more of the same...
