Does renting a paint sprayer still save money after masking and cleanup?
Discussion options
How do you compare the cost of renting a paint sprayer with brush-and-roller work once the extra prep and cleanup are included? I’d like to understand what a useful estimate should separate: rental, setup and masking labor, cleanup, and paint.
I’m guessing the surface area and amount of trim or other detail can change the balance, but I’m unsure how much paint waste and overspray protection to allow for. What would you ask a painter or rental shop to spell out so the comparison’s fair?

I’d ask for the estimated paint quantity to be listed separately for spraying and rolling, rather than applying one blanket waste allowance to both. Spraying can use more paint when some misses the surface, but the difference depends on the equipment, technique, and how much of the area needs overspray protection. Without those separate quantities, the comparison could make either method look cheaper than it is.
The amount of open wall versus detail can change the labor balance a lot. Spraying may save application time on broad, unobstructed areas, while lots of trim, edges, or nearby surfaces can add masking and separate brushwork. I’d compare those tasks separately in the estimate: a mostly open area may better offset the setup and cleanup, while a detail-heavy one may not.
