How do you pace your painting projects - slow and steady or all at once?
It’s weirdly satisfying watching the color shift, even if it means I’m painting for days.
Totally get that - there’s something calming about seeing the room transform bit by bit. Do you ever find yourself obsessing over getting those crisp edges, or do you just go with the flow and touch up later? I always end up fussing over the trim way longer than I should...
I’m the same way with trim - it’s like once I start, I can’t stop until it’s perfect. I’ll tape everything off and still end up going back with a tiny brush to fix little spots. Drives me nuts but also kind of satisfying when it’s finally done. I’ve tried the “just touch up later” approach, but then I end up staring at the uneven lines every time I walk by… so now I just accept that trim takes forever and put on a podcast to make it less tedious. The rest of the walls, though, I’m way more relaxed about. If there’s a spot that needs another coat, I just shrug and get it next round. Trim is my nemesis, though.

That’s exactly what happens to me, except I usually discover a spot I missed right after I’ve cleaned the brush and packed everything away. Every. Single. Time. Do you find taping actually helps that much? I keep thinking it’ll save time, but sometimes it feels like the tape just gives me a false sense of security and then paint still sneaks under anyway.
I totally relate to the wall vs. trim thing, too. When it comes to walls, I’m weirdly chill - if there’s a random spot that needs another coat, I just figure I’ll catch it next time. But with trim, if there’s even the tiniest wobble in the line, it bugs me for weeks.
Do you have any tricks for getting those crisp lines on trim without losing your mind? Or is it just one of those things where you have to accept it’ll take forever and embrace the process? Maybe I need to find better podcasts...
I’m with you on the tape struggle. Sometimes I feel like taping just adds another step, and I still end up touching up anyway. The only thing that’s really helped me is using a good angled brush and going super slow on the trim. I’ll press the brush right up to the edge and just kind of “pull” the paint along the line. Not perfect, but it saves me from peeling tape and finding a mess underneath. And yeah, a solid podcast definitely helps pass the time when you’re stuck doing those tiny fixes.
Honestly, I hear you on the tape thing - it can be more hassle than help sometimes. I’ve seen a lot of folks get frustrated peeling it off and finding bleed-through or jagged lines. Your method with the angled brush is spot on. Slow and steady really does win the race, especially on trim. I always tell people, don’t stress if it’s not perfect on the first pass. Even pros have to go back for touch-ups. And yeah, having something good to listen to makes all the difference when you’re stuck doing those detail bits.
