Finally got my outdoor space looking cozy and inviting
Couldn’t agree more about the oil-based stains - they were basically indestructible, but you’re right, most of them are off the shelves now. I’ve tried a few of the newer “eco” options and honestly, they don’t last through more than a couple winters before things start looking rough again.
- Water-based stains: Cheaper up front, but I feel like I’m buying twice as much in the long run. Anyone else notice they fade out faster on the sunniest spots?
- Sanding: Definitely worth the effort, especially if you’re trying to stretch the life of older wood. I usually just hit the worst spots, but maybe I should be doing the whole thing…
- Planters: I switched to those recycled rubber ones last year. Not the prettiest, but they survived a hailstorm and a couple of my kids’ soccer balls. The fiberglass ones are nice but seem to crack if you move them around too much.
- Squirrels: Don’t even get me started. I tried putting rocks in the bottom of my pots to weigh them down, but they still manage to tip them over. Last summer, I caught one trying to stash a whole apple in my window box. Never thought I’d be outsmarted by a rodent.
One thing I’m curious about - has anyone found a decent budget-friendly alternative for sealing decks that actually holds up? I keep seeing these “nano” sealers online, but the price tags are wild. Wondering if it’s just marketing hype or if they’re actually worth it.
Also, anyone tried lining planters with that pond liner stuff? Read somewhere it helps with longevity, but not sure if it’s overkill for basic outdoor pots.
Anyway, always looking for ways to stretch a dollar, especially if it means less time re-staining or chasing squirrels off the porch...
I’m right there with you on the water-based stains - mine faded out in less than a year where the sun hits hardest. As for those nano sealers, I tried one last fall (can’t remember the brand) and honestly, it didn’t blow me away for the price. Maybe a little better than the cheap stuff, but not by much. Pond liner in planters actually works great for wood ones, though you’ll want to poke some drainage holes or your roots will be swimming. Squirrels… I’ve just accepted they run the place now.
I hear you on the nano sealers - tried one myself thinking it’d be a game changer, but honestly, didn’t see much difference either. Sometimes the pricier stuff just isn’t worth it. Good call on the pond liner in the planters, though. I did the same with some old whiskey barrels, and with drainage holes, they’ve held up way better. As for squirrels, yeah... I’ve stopped fighting that battle. They’re just part of the yard now. At least they’re entertaining.

Funny you mention the squirrels - mine have basically claimed the patio furniture as their own. Ever tried any of those “squirrel-proof” feeders? I swear they just see it as a challenge. About the pond liner, did you notice any weird smells at first? I had a bit of that with mine, but it faded.
Those “squirrel-proof” feeders are basically an IQ test for the local wildlife, right? I swear, I’ve watched one little guy hang upside down and do a full-on acrobatic routine just to get a single seed. At this point, I’m half convinced they’re smarter than me.
About the pond liner - yeah, I did notice a bit of a plasticky smell at first, especially when the sun hit it. It faded after a week or two, though. I rinsed mine out before installing, but I’m not sure it made much difference. Did you do anything special to get rid of the smell, or just let it air out?
On the nano sealers, I’m with you. I tried one on my pavers last year, and honestly, couldn’t tell if it was doing anything except making my wallet lighter. Sometimes the old-school stuff just works better.
Curious - have you tried any DIY tricks to keep the squirrels off your furniture? I’ve heard about using spicy sprays, but haven’t worked up the nerve to try it yet...
