I've actually had decent luck with budget tools, even on big projects. For instance, I renovated my entire Victorian staircase—spindles, handrails, the works—with a cheapo impact driver. Trick is to pace yourself and not push it too hard. Sure, it's noisier and takes a little patience, but if you're careful and let the tool do its thing without forcing it through tough spots, you might be surprised how long it lasts...
