Finally got through a whole project on one charge—anyone else surprised by their batteries lately?

Honestly, I used to dread dragging out my cordless drill for anything bigger than a picture frame. But last weekend, I managed to build a whole raised garden bed (with like, way too many screws) and the battery just kept going. Didn’t even have to swap it out or plug in a backup. I remember when you’d be lucky to get half an hour before the thing started wheezing.

Is it just me, or have these newer lithium batteries gotten way better? I’m almost suspicious, like maybe I forgot to charge it last time and it’s just running on pure stubbornness. Anyone else had a tool surprise them with how long it lasted? Or maybe the opposite—any battery duds lately?

I totally get what you mean about the battery “stubbornness”—I had a similar moment last month putting up reclaimed wood shelves in my kitchen. Used my drill for hours, and I kept waiting for that sad little whine that means it’s time to swap batteries, but nope. Just kept chugging along. I remember the old NiCd batteries from years back—those things would die if you even looked at them funny.

I do think these newer lithium ones are a game changer, especially for folks like me who tend to forget to charge stuff until the last minute. Only hiccup I’ve had was with an off-brand impact driver I picked up on sale... battery lasted about as long as a sneeze. Lesson learned: sometimes it’s worth sticking with the name brands, even if it costs a bit more.

Honestly, it’s made me way less hesitant to tackle bigger projects. Not having to stop and recharge every hour is such a relief.

I get the appeal of sticking with name brands, but honestly, I’ve had some luck with off-brand batteries—maybe I just got lucky? Sometimes it feels like the price difference is more about the label than the tech. That said, I do notice some tools just don’t play nice with third-party batteries, which is a pain. Still, I’m not totally convinced it’s always worth paying double for the big names unless you’re using them every day.

Had a similar thought last fall when I picked up a generic battery for my old drill. Honestly, it powered through a weekend of demo work just fine. Only hiccup was it didn’t quite fit as snug as the original, but for half the price, I can live with that. I do wonder if longevity will be an issue down the line, though...

I've noticed the same thing with off-brand batteries. Used one for my impact driver on a kitchen install—didn’t notice much difference in performance, but the fit was a little loose, which made me nervous around delicate trim. Still, if it holds up over time, that’s hard to argue with. Curious if anyone’s actually had one of those generics conk out early, or if it’s just a perception thing.
