Totally get where you’re coming from—attics are like the wild west of insulation. I’ve had a mini-split in a garage-turned-bedroom that basically tapped out during a cold snap, so you’re not alone. The newer heat pumps are supposed to be better, but honestly, I’m still a bit wary. As for noise, sometimes just putting the outdoor unit on some rubber pads or moving it off the wall can make a world of difference. It’s all trial and error... and maybe a little cursing at 2am when it rattles. Hang in there—it’s worth it when you finally get it dialed in.

I hear you on the trial and error part. When I finished my attic, I thought I’d nailed the insulation, but the first winter was brutal—felt like a meat locker up there. Ended up doubling up on batts and sealing every gap I could find. Still gets a bit drafty, but at least I’m not sleeping in a parka anymore. The noise from the mini-split is a whole other beast... mine hums just enough to remind me it’s working, but not enough to drive me nuts. Worth it? Most days, yeah, but man, it’s never as easy as those YouTube videos make it look.

I get what you mean about insulation—YouTube makes it look like a weekend project, but reality hits different. Curious if you found any budget-friendly ways to cut down on drafts? I’ve tried weatherstripping, but sometimes it feels like a losing battle. Did the mini-split end up saving you on heating bills, or is it just another expense?

I hear you on the weatherstripping—it helps, but sometimes those old gaps just find a way to sneak the cold back in. I actually had decent luck with those foam outlet insulators and heavy curtains, especially for single-pane windows. The mini-split was a game changer for me, but I did notice a bump in the electric bill. Did you end up adding insulation in the rafters, or just focused on sealing drafts?

Honestly, I’m not convinced heavy curtains do much for real drafts. I tried them over my old garage windows and still felt the chill. For me, sealing up the rafters with spray foam made a bigger difference than any window fix. Electric bill went up, but the room’s actually usable now.
