Why does load distribution always trip me up?
I’ve had the same debate with myself every time I scope out a renovation - go green or go home, but not literally, since I don’t want the house collapsing. Tried pitching reclaimed wood to my engineer once and got a look like I’d suggested using spaghetti for joists. Anyone else ever wonder if structural safety meetings are just code for “let’s crush your design dreams today”? Engineered wood’s definitely a middle ground, but man, those “eco” points are hard to keep when you’re staring at load charts and insurance paperwork...
Funny you mention the spaghetti joists - my GC once joked about using bamboo for beams and I swear the structural guy nearly had a heart attack. But have you looked into some of the newer cross-laminated timber options? They’re pricier, but I’ve seen them pass muster with both insurance and code folks, at least in certain applications. Maybe not as “reclaimed” as you’d like, but they tick more eco boxes than standard engineered lumber. Ever get pushback on those, or is it just me who gets the side-eye when I bring up anything that isn’t steel or concrete?

I get the side-eye all the time when I suggest alternatives to steel or concrete, especially from the older engineers on my projects. Cross-laminated timber (CLT) is one of those things that sounds great on paper - sustainable, strong, and it looks amazing if you leave it exposed. But as soon as I mention it, someone starts muttering about fire ratings or “unproven” longevity. It’s like they forget we’re not building log cabins anymore.
I’ve had a bit of luck pushing CLT through for smaller spans and roof structures, but anything over two stories and suddenly everyone’s nervous. Insurance folks in particular seem to have a love/hate thing with timber - some policies are fine with it if you can show the right certifications, while others just shut it down immediately. I think part of the problem is just unfamiliarity; people are comfortable with what they know, and steel/concrete is basically the default.
From an interior perspective, I actually love working with CLT because you get these warm wood ceilings that don’t need extra finishing... but then you end up having to coordinate all your lighting and HVAC runs super carefully so you’re not drilling into anything structural. That’s a headache nobody warns you about.
On the eco side, yeah, CLT definitely gets more points than standard engineered lumber - especially if you can source FSC-certified panels. Not quite as “reclaimed” as old barn beams or whatever, but way less greenwashing than some of the so-called sustainable products out there.
Honestly, I wish more GCs were open to experimenting a little. The pushback isn’t always logical - it’s just habit. And sometimes I think people forget that even concrete and steel have their own quirks with load distribution; nothing’s truly straightforward once you start getting creative with layouts or open spans.
Funny enough, I once had a client who insisted on using reclaimed joists from an old mill for their loft project. Looked incredible but trying to get those inspected and approved was a circus act... The structural engineer aged about ten years over that one.
Anyway, CLT’s not perfect but it’s definitely worth considering if you can get past the initial skepticism. Just be ready for lots of meetings where you have to repeat yourself about fire ratings and code compliance - over and over again...

Totally get this. Every time I bring up CLT, someone acts like it’s made of matchsticks. The fire rating debate just never dies, does it? But honestly, steel and concrete have their own drama - ever tried running ductwork through a post-tensioned slab? That’s a whole different circus. I’d take the CLT headaches over the endless patching and core drilling any day. Curious - have you had any luck convincing insurance folks with third-party fire tests, or is it always a dead end?

The third-party fire tests help a bit, but it really depends on who you get on the other end of the phone. Some folks are open to it, especially if you can show them the European data (those tests are pretty robust), but others just see “wood” and shut down. I had one project where we literally had to walk the adjuster through the site and show them the char layer in person before they’d even consider it.
Honestly, I’ve found it’s less about the science and more about how comfortable the insurer is with “new” materials. Meanwhile, like you said, nobody bats an eye at all the crazy stuff that goes on with concrete or steel. I once spent a whole afternoon tracing a mystery conduit through a slab, only to find out it was abandoned years ago... and we still had to patch around it. CLT’s quirks are at least predictable, even if the coordination is a pain.
