Smart thermostat short-cycling after installation: wiring, settings, or HVAC issue?

I installed a smart thermostat [immediately / a few days] ago, and since then my system has been cycling much more often. It runs for about [cycle length] minutes, shuts off, then starts again roughly [time] later. The temperature only moves about [temperature swing]°F each time.
It’s a [gas furnace with central AC / heat pump / other], and the thermostat is wired to [terminals]. The system [does / doesn’t] reach the set temperature before shutting off.
Before I call an HVAC tech, what are the safest things to check? I’m wondering whether this sounds more like a thermostat setting or wiring issue, versus something with the HVAC system itself. I can check the filter, vents, thermostat location, and settings, but I’m not going to move wires with the power on.
What symptoms would point to a bad temperature differential or cycle-rate setting, incorrect heat-pump configuration, restricted airflow, or a furnace limit switch shutting things down?
