Wi-fi dead zones and cable chaos: anyone else fighting with their setup?

I hear you on the old insulation - my place is from the 50s and I swear the walls are made of Wi-Fi kryptonite. I tried hiding my router in a basket with holes punched in it for airflow, but it still gets a bit toasty. Not sure it’s the best idea, but it looks way better than a blinking box on the shelf. Has anyone tried painting or decorating their cables to blend in? I’m tempted to try, but worried about messing something up.
