I get where you’re coming from about vintage tools—some of them are just better as conversation pieces than actual workhorses. But I’d argue there’s a middle ground. Those old augers and planes, if tuned up right, can still pull their weight, especially for detail work or when you want more control than power tools give. As for the hybrid hand planes with recycled steel, I tried one on a job last year—honestly, it felt solid but not drastically different from my old Stanley. The eco angle is nice, but if your current tools are working and you keep them maintained, that’s pretty sustainable too. Sometimes tradition wins out just because it’s reliable.
