Aluminum isn’t as flashy, but it doesn’t care if your nephew’s popsicle melts all over it.

This is exactly why I always lean aluminum for family homes. Glass looks amazing in photos, but in real life? Every fingerprint, water spot, and dog nose print shows up like a neon sign. If you’re flipping or renting out, you want something that holds up to chaos and doesn’t need a weekly power-wash.

Here’s my quick rundown:

1. Glass: Looks high-end, but unless you’ve got a cleaning crew (or endless patience), it’ll drive you nuts. Sun + sprinklers = streak city.
2. Aluminum: Not as “wow,” but you can hose it down and call it a day. It’s also way less likely to get cracked by a rogue soccer ball.

Honestly, after seeing one too many glass panels get chipped during backyard wrestling matches, I’m convinced aluminum’s the way to go for most folks. If you’re staging for sale and want that magazine look, maybe spring for glass... just be ready to wipe it down every hour until the open house is over.

Totally agree that aluminum is the safer bet for families, especially if kids or pets are in the mix. I’ve seen glass fences look stunning for about five minutes—then the reality of smudges and water spots kicks in. The only thing I’ll add is, if you’re set on glass for the view, there are anti-spot coatings out there that help a bit (though not magic). For most day-to-day living, aluminum just takes way less effort and stress.

That’s been my experience too. We put in a glass fence at our old place because the view was killer, but honestly, it was a losing battle with fingerprints and pollen. I will say, though, the anti-spot coatings helped a little during spring, but not enough to make it low-maintenance. Aluminum’s just easier to live with, especially if you’re juggling kids, dogs, and everything else life throws at you. Plus, powder-coated aluminum can look pretty sleek these days—doesn’t have to be boring.

I get the aluminum appeal—definitely less hassle. But I gotta admit, I’m still a sucker for glass if you’ve got a killer view. Yeah, it’s more work, but I found that a quick squeegee session every couple days kept ours looking decent. Not saying it’s for everyone, but sometimes the extra effort’s worth it if you want that “wow” factor. My kids thought it was a window and ran into it once or twice... so maybe not ideal for everyone’s sanity.

That cracked me up—seen that happen more than once on jobs. Glass does look amazing, especially if you’ve got a view worth showing off. But yeah, fingerprints and water spots are the trade-off. I’ve noticed in humid areas, glass can get foggy pretty quick too. Aluminum’s definitely easier to live with, but sometimes it just doesn’t have the same vibe. Guess it comes down to how much maintenance you’re willing to put up with for the look you want.
