Glass vs. aluminum fencing around the pool—what’s actually better?

I’ve actually looked into recycled-content aluminum fencing for a couple of flips, and it’s more legit than I expected. Some brands use a decent percentage of post-consumer scrap, though you have to dig into the specs—marketing can be a bit... optimistic. The finish and durability seemed on par with standard aluminum, at least in the brands I tried. Glass is beautiful, but the energy to make and transport those panels is no joke, and if you ever crack one, replacement’s a pain.

One thing I’ve noticed: recycled aluminum fencing sometimes has a slightly different texture or color tone, but nothing most folks would spot unless they’re really looking. I’m curious if anyone’s run into issues with corrosion or fading over time with the recycled stuff? I haven’t seen it yet, but I wonder if the mix makes a difference long-term.

I went with recycled aluminum around our ancient pool last year—mostly because the idea of glass and my two golden retrievers gave me heart palpitations. Haven’t noticed any weird corrosion or fading yet, but I did get a couple panels that looked a smidge different in color. My neighbor claimed he could tell, but he’s the kind of guy who alphabetizes his spice rack. If anything, the only thing that’s faded is my memory of how much it cost.

Glass looks amazing, but I get the dog worry—those nose prints and paw smudges are no joke. Aluminum’s a solid pick for durability, especially with pets running around. I’ve seen the color variation thing before; sometimes it’s just a batch issue from the manufacturer. Most folks never notice unless they’re the type to line up their lawn chairs by shade, you know?

Honestly, as long as you’re not seeing corrosion or major fading, you probably made the right call. Glass can be a pain to keep spotless and it’s not always practical with four-legged family members. The only thing I’d double-check is that the powder coating on the aluminum is holding up—if that goes, you might see some chalkiness down the line, but usually takes years. And yeah, pool projects have a way of making your wallet forgetful... funny how that works.

I hear you on the glass—looks stunning in those design magazines, but in real life? My neighbor did it and now spends half his weekends chasing smudges and bird prints. I went with aluminum for our old place, mostly because I didn’t want to be out there with a squeegee every other day. Plus, with kids and a dog, I’d rather have something that can take a beating. The powder coating’s held up better than I expected, honestly. Only thing is, it doesn’t have that “wow” factor like glass, but I’ll take low maintenance over fancy any day.

Glass fences do look amazing, but honestly, I don't think I'd have the patience for all that cleaning. My aunt put in a glass fence around her pool last year and every time we visit, she's fussing about fingerprints and water spots. It does make her backyard look straight out of a resort, though... kind of hard not to be a little jealous.

We’re just starting to plan our own pool area and leaning aluminum for similar reasons—less stress, especially since our dog is basically a tornado on four legs. That said, I did see some matte-finish glass panels at a home show recently. Supposedly they hide smudges better? No clue if that's true or just marketing talk.

Anyway, I figure if the kids and the dog are happy and I’m not spending my weekends scrubbing panels, that’s a win. The “wow” factor would be nice, but I’ll take my sanity where I can get it.
