Glass vs. Aluminum Fencing Around the Pool—What’s Actually Better?

Totally get what you mean about the smudges—glass looks killer, but man, even a light drizzle can make it look like you’ve never cleaned it in your life. I’ve flipped a few houses with both types of fencing, and here’s how I usually break it down:

1. If you want that “resort” feel, glass is hard to beat. But yeah, fingerprints and water spots are just part of the deal. Quick tip: a squeegee by the pool makes touch-ups super easy, and it becomes a habit after a while.

2. Aluminum’s definitely the winner for low maintenance. It won’t rust, and you can hose it down if anything gets on it. But—like you said—it doesn’t have that same wow factor.

About recycled glass panels: I installed them once for a client who was big on eco-friendly stuff. They looked almost identical to regular glass, maybe just a bit more texture. Durability-wise, no complaints so far (been about two years), but they do seem to show scratches a little easier if you’re not careful with lawn tools or pool toys.

End of the day, it’s all about what you want to deal with—constant cleaning or a little less flash. Both have their perks, but glass does make a backyard pop... even if it means wiping away tiny handprints every other day.

Honestly, I think the “wow factor” of glass is a bit overhyped for some spaces. It’s gorgeous, sure, but I’ve seen plenty of modern aluminum designs that look sharp and actually complement landscaping better—especially if you’re going for a more understated vibe. Plus, in terms of safety, aluminum’s less prone to shattering if something heavy hits it (think: rogue soccer balls). Maintenance is one thing, but long-term durability and how the fencing ages with your yard are worth weighing too. Sometimes the subtle choice ends up looking more timeless.

Honestly, I get the appeal of glass—nothing beats that “invisible” look when you want to show off a killer pool or view. But I’ve had a few properties where glass fencing turned into a full-time cleaning gig. Every splash, every fingerprint... it’s like the fence is always tattling on you.

“aluminum’s less prone to shattering if something heavy hits it (think: rogue soccer balls)”

This is spot on. I’ve seen more than one glass panel meet its match with a flying toy or an overenthusiastic dog. Aluminum just shrugs it off and keeps going. Plus, if you’re thinking resale, buyers with kids or pets usually lean toward low-maintenance and sturdy over fancy.

That said, glass does have that wow factor for the right space. But for most yards, aluminum blends in and ages better—less drama, more peace of mind. Sometimes boring is actually the smart move.

Had to laugh at the “fence is always tattling on you” bit—so true. I put in glass panels around our pool a few years back because I loved the idea of keeping the view open. Looked amazing for about a week, then reality hit. Between the kids’ cannonballs and the dog’s nose prints, it was a constant battle with streaks and spots. Even rain didn’t help—just left more marks.

“aluminum blends in and ages better—less drama, more peace of mind.”

I get that now. Swapped out two panels after a neighbor’s kid kicked a soccer ball straight into them. Not cheap, either. Aluminum might not have that “wow” factor, but honestly, I’d take less maintenance over fancy any day. Sometimes you just want to enjoy the pool instead of cleaning up after it...

Totally get where you’re coming from. I was sold on the “clear view” idea too, but didn’t factor in how much time I’d spend wiping away water spots and fingerprints.

Couldn’t agree more—aluminum might not be as flashy, but it’s way less hassle. If I had to do it again, I’d probably go that route.
