Totally get where you’re coming from. We went with glass panels a couple years back because my partner loved the “invisible” look, but I’ll admit, the upkeep is real. Like you said, it’s not a magic solution. The self-cleaning coating helped for a while, but after one summer of pool parties and sunscreened kids, I started noticing streaks and spots that just wouldn’t budge unless I got in there with some elbow grease.

Aluminum is definitely less hassle long-term, but if you love that open look and don’t mind a little upkeep, glass with a good coating isn’t a bad compromise.

That’s pretty much where we landed too. I do miss the days of just hosing down the old aluminum fence and calling it good. But honestly, the view is worth it for us—just had to adjust my expectations. If you’re someone who can’t stand seeing smudges or water spots, glass might drive you nuts after a while. But if you’re okay with a bit of maintenance, it really does make the backyard feel more open. Just wish the “self-cleaning” part was a little more literal...

Honestly, I had the same debate with myself for weeks. Ended up going with aluminum because I knew I’d never keep up with glass cleaning—my kids are basically streak-generating machines. If you’re even a little bit of a neat freak, glass can be a love-hate thing. But yeah, that open look is hard to beat... sometimes I wish I’d just sucked it up and gone for it.

I keep going back and forth on this too. The glass looks amazing, but honestly, how bad is the cleaning in real life? Like, are we talking wiping it down every day, or is it just a once-a-week kind of thing? I’ve got a dog that likes to nose everything, so I’m picturing smudges everywhere. Aluminum just seems easier, but does it feel too closed off around the pool?

I totally get the back-and-forth. The look of glass is hard to beat, but yeah, cleaning is a real thing—especially with pets. I’ve installed glass panels around my own pool, and honestly, it’s not every day, but it’s definitely more than once a week if you want it looking spotless. Water spots and dog nose prints show up way more than you’d think. Sometimes I just let it go for a bit, but then the sun hits just right and all those smudges pop out.

Aluminum is way lower maintenance in that sense, but you’re right—it can make the space feel boxed in if you go for the solid panels. Have you looked at the slatted or “pool picket” styles? They’re not as open as glass, but they don’t feel like a fortress either. I guess it comes down to how much time you want to spend wiping things down versus how much you care about that open view. For me, I love seeing straight through to the water, even if it means chasing smudges more often than I’d like...

It’s wild how much of a difference the sun angle makes, right? I swear my glass pool fence looks perfect until about 4pm, then suddenly it’s like a crime scene of paw prints and splash marks. I keep telling myself I’ll get into a routine, but honestly...life happens. Sometimes it’s just “good enough” until company comes over.

I’ve seen those picket-style aluminum fences and they’re not bad—definitely airier than the solid ones. But I always wonder: do they still feel secure if you’ve got little kids or pets who are escape artists? Also, does anyone else get weird about the idea of metal heating up in the summer? I had a friend whose dog burned his nose on a hot railing once, which kinda stuck with me.

At the end of the day, is it really about the view, or is it just wanting to pretend you’re at some fancy resort in your own backyard? Because I’ll admit, sometimes I wipe down the glass just for that “wow” moment when you step outside...even if it only lasts five minutes before the next smudge shows up.
