GLASS VS. ALUMINUM FENCING AROUND THE POOL—WHAT’S ACTUALLY BETTER?

I’ve been wrestling with this too, especially since my place is a century-old brick house and I’m trying not to clash with the old-school vibe. I did have an aluminum fence once (not by the pool though), and you’re right about it getting super hot—my dog would avoid it in summer. With glass, I worry about how it’d look if you ever get those fine scratches or chips over time. Anybody here ever had to replace a panel? Wondering if that’s a pain or pretty straightforward.

Honestly, I don’t get the hype around glass fencing for older homes. I know it looks slick and all, but I’ve seen it just feel out of place against brick or anything with a bit of age to it. Plus, you’re right about scratches—once you notice one, you can’t unsee it. Replacing a panel isn’t always as simple as it sounds, either. Sometimes you have to special order the exact size, and if your panels are a few years old, the tint or finish might not match anymore. That’s a headache.

Aluminum does get hot, but if you go with a powder-coated matte finish, it’s not nearly as bad. And honestly, it’s way less maintenance. No constant cleaning to keep fingerprints and water spots at bay. I’d rather deal with a fence that gets warm than one that needs babying every week. Just my two cents—sometimes the “modern” option isn’t worth the hassle, especially if you’re trying to keep some character.

I get where you’re coming from about glass not fitting with older homes. I did a job last year on a 70s brick place—owners wanted glass, but once it was up, it just looked off. They ended up swapping to black aluminum, and it actually tied the whole backyard together way better. Maintenance-wise, aluminum’s a breeze. Only thing I’d add: if you’ve got kids or pets, aluminum’s less stressful. No worrying about chips or cracks every time someone bumps into it.

Couldn’t agree more about aluminum just working better with certain homes, especially older ones. Glass is sleek, but sometimes it just feels out of place, right? I actually love how black aluminum can almost disappear into the landscape if you pick the right style. Ever notice how it plays off greenery? Plus, way less stress if you’ve got wild kids or a dog that thinks he’s a linebacker...

Had to laugh at the linebacker dog bit—mine’s more of a bulldozer, honestly. We went with black aluminum for the pool fence last year and I’ve never regretted it. Glass looked cool in the showroom but all I could see was future fingerprints and cleaning supplies. The aluminum just blends in and doesn’t break the bank. Plus, if something gets dented, it’s not a total disaster.
