Filters at the pool end are a game changer—been there with the leaf clogs, too. Have you ever tried using a pop-up emitter at the street side? I’ve found they help keep the outflow tidy and don’t mess up the curb too much. Just curious, how deep did you bury your pipes? Sometimes I wonder if going a little deeper would help with freezing in winter or if it’s just overkill.

I get the appeal of pop-up emitters—they do look neat at the curb and keep things from getting too messy. But honestly, I skipped them just to save a few bucks. I ended up running my pipe right to the street gutter with a simple grate. It’s not as pretty, but it works fine for me and didn’t cost much at all. Haven’t had any complaints from the neighbors yet, so maybe it’s good enough.

About burying the pipes deeper: I used to think that was necessary too, especially with our winters. But after talking to a couple folks around here, I just went about 8-10 inches down. The water drains out before it can freeze up anyway, and I haven’t had any issues so far (knock on wood). Going deeper seemed like more digging than it was worth—plus, more materials and time.

If you’re worried about freezing, maybe just make sure your pipe slopes well and empties completely? That’s what made the difference for me. Sometimes simple is better... or at least cheaper.

I get wanting to keep things simple, but I’ve seen those shallow pipes freeze up and crack after a rough winter—especially if there’s any low spot where water sits. Might be worth going a bit deeper or using insulated pipe if you’re worried about long-term headaches. Sometimes the extra work upfront saves you from digging it all up later... just my two cents.

I learned that lesson the hard way a few years back—thought I could get away with running a drain line just below the surface. One brutal cold snap later, I was out there with a pickaxe, cursing my past self. If you’re already digging, might as well go a bit deeper or wrap it in foam. It’s a pain upfront but way less hassle than patching busted pipes in February.

Couldn’t agree more—going deeper is worth it, especially if you’re in a freeze zone. I’d add: slope the drain line away from the house, and if you can, use gravel around the pipe for drainage. Keeps things flowing and helps avoid soggy spots in the yard. Learned that one after my first “lakefront” lawn experience...
