Cardboard’s cheap, but yeah, I’ve chased more than a few soggy Amazon boxes around the yard—my neighbors probably think I’m training for some weird Olympic event. I’m all for the moving blanket idea, though. Ever try those cheap plastic drop cloths from the hardware store? I wonder if that’d help slow the flow without turning into a slip-n-slide...
I’ve actually tried those plastic drop cloths, and they can get pretty slippery once there’s a steady flow of water. They’re not bad for slowing things down, but you might end up with a muddy mess at the edge. Has anyone experimented with laying down sand or gravel underneath to help with drainage? I’m wondering if that’d soak up some of the water before it spreads out.
Tried sand once, but it kinda just turned into a gritty mess at the edge of my old garden. Gravel did a better job, especially the chunkier stuff—water seemed to slip through faster, and I didn’t end up with that swampy patch by the lilacs. Still got some muddy shoes, though... nature always finds a way, right?
Gravel really does the trick for drainage, especially if you go with the bigger pieces—totally agree there. Sand just compacts and gets weird over time, at least in my experience. One thing I tried last year was mixing in some organic matter, like bark chips, along with gravel around the edges. It seemed to help a bit with the mud factor, though yeah, shoes still took a hit after heavy rain. Nature’s got its own agenda, for sure... sometimes I just accept a little mess as part of the deal.
