White scale keeps coming back around bathroom faucets

White deposits around faucet aerators and spouts can look like mineral scale, but I’m not sure how to tell when the fixture’s finish is deteriorating instead. Does the faucet finish change what’s safe to use for routine cleaning?

I’m also curious when it’s better to remove and clean an aerator rather than treat the deposits in place. What’s a sensible approach that won’t damage the finish or leave the faucet with restricted flow?

White scale is usually a crust on the parts water reaches, while a finish that’s pitted, bubbled, or visibly missing may be damaged rather than dirty. If gentle cleaning doesn’t change the altered area, avoid scrubbing harder; the finish could be vulnerable.

The finish matters because acidic cleaners can damage some coatings and plated parts. For an aerator, removal is most useful when deposits are inside the screen or flow is restricted. If you soak it, soak only the removable part, and only with a cleaner its manufacturer permits.
