Keeping track of renovation plans without losing your mind

Honestly, I’ve seen even the most organized clients lose track of stuff mid-reno. I once had a homeowner swear she’d labeled every paint swatch, only to find her cat had made off with half of them. You just have to expect a little chaos - systems help, but flexibility is what keeps you sane.

- I’ve got a running joke that my 1920s house eats blueprints for breakfast.
- Sticky notes and binders help, but honestly, I’ve lost more floor samples to the dog than I care to admit.
- I keep a “renovation basket” in the kitchen - everything goes in there, from receipts to paint chips. Not foolproof, but better than chasing stuff all over the place.
- You’re right about flexibility. If you can’t laugh when your carefully labeled hardware ends up in the compost bin (don’t ask), you’ll lose your mind fast…

I hear you on the chaos - my kitchen table looks like a hardware store exploded half the time. I started snapping pics of receipts and labels with my phone, just in case they vanish. Not perfect, but at least I can usually find what I need when things go missing... which is often.

Honestly, I’ve tried the snapping-photos-of-everything trick too. It works for receipts and labels, but when I’m juggling three different renovation projects, I still end up with a camera roll that’s just a mess of paint swatches and blurry lumber barcodes. What’s helped me (sometimes) is setting up a shared folder in Google Drive - one for each property. I dump all the pics, PDFs, and random notes in there, and tag them by room or contractor. Not a perfect system, but it beats scrolling through 400 photos of tile samples when I just need the plumber’s invoice.

Ever tried using one of those project management apps? I keep wondering if it’s worth the time to set up, or if it’s just another thing to maintain. Or maybe you’ve found a way to keep it simple without all the tech?

Story of my life. I once spent 20 minutes scrolling through photos of grout samples just to find a screenshot of a light fixture. I tried Trello for a while - love the idea, but it started feeling like I needed a project manager just to manage the project manager. Have you ever just gone old-school with a physical binder? Sometimes I wonder if sticky notes and a label maker are underrated...
