I hear you on the endless “IMG_2024…” parade. I tried folders too, but then I’d forget which folder was for the kitchen and which was for the bathroom—turns out “sample1” isn’t super helpful six months later. Lately, I’ve just started snapping a quick pic of my handwritten notes or paint chips next to whatever I’m photographing. Not high-tech, but at least it jogs my memory when I’m staring at grout options for the third time this week…

Keeping Track of Renovation Plans Without Losing Your Mind

Lately, I’ve just started snapping a quick pic of my handwritten notes or paint chips next to whatever I’m photographing. Not high-tech, but at least it jogs my memory when I’m staring at grout options for the third time this week…

I tried the “photo with a note” trick too, but my handwriting is so bad that future-me just ends up squinting at blurry scribbles and wondering if I meant “tile” or “trial.” I even labeled a folder “stuff for the thing” once, which was... not my finest organizational moment.

Honestly, I’ve started using voice memos. I’ll take a photo and then immediately record a quick message like, “This is the tile I liked for the kitchen backsplash, not the bathroom, future me—don’t mess this up.” It feels a bit silly talking to my phone in the hardware aisle, but at least it’s idiot-proof (well, mostly).

I do wish there was a magic app that just knew what I was thinking when I took the picture. Until then, it’s a mix of folders, voice notes, and the occasional desperate scroll through 200 nearly identical photos. Renovation brain is real.

Totally get the “renovation brain” struggle. I’ve seen so many clients end up with folders full of random photos and cryptic notes—sometimes even I can’t decode them later.

- Voice memos are honestly underrated. They capture way more context than a scribbled note, especially when you’re juggling samples in one hand and your phone in the other.
- If you haven’t tried it, some apps let you add captions or tags to photos right as you take them. Not perfect, but it’s a step up from “stuff for the thing” (which made me laugh—been there).
- One trick I use: take a wide shot of the whole display, then zoom in on the sample you like, and immediately snap a pic of the label or SKU. That way, even if your brain is fried later, you’ve got a breadcrumb trail.

Honestly, everyone’s doing something weird in those aisles—no one’s judging.

I wish there was a magic app too, but until then, it’s all about whatever system makes sense to you in the moment. And yeah... sometimes that just means scrolling through endless grout photos at midnight.

Those endless folders of tile photos hit home. I’ve definitely stood in the paint aisle, muttering into my phone about “the eco-friendly green, not the avocado one.” Voice memos help, but I still end up with mystery swatches sometimes... it’s just part of the chaos.

- Been there with the “which green is this again?” dilemma. I’ve got folders labeled things like “maybe kitchen” and “not sure, but nice,” and it’s still a mess sometimes.
- Voice memos are a lifesaver, but I swear, half the time I listen back and can’t remember what wall I was even talking about.
- One thing that’s helped me: I started sticking painter’s tape on the back of swatches and writing the store/brand right there. Not perfect, but at least I know where to hunt if I lose track.
- Honestly, part of me thinks the chaos is just baked into DIY. If you’re not juggling three half-finished ideas and a pile of mystery samples, are you even renovating?
- Don’t sweat the confusion too much. Even pros end up with “what was I thinking?” moments. It all comes together in the end... or at least close enough that only you’ll notice the difference.
