- Totally get the chaos—my phone is a graveyard of “before” pics and random paint swatches I can’t even remember taking.
- I tried using folders, but then I’d forget which folder was for what project... not much better.
- Emailing yourself works, but I started using a notes app where you can attach photos. That way, I can jot down measurements or ideas right with the pics.
- For receipts, I just snap a photo and toss the paper. Not perfect, but at least they’re all in one spot (ish).
- Honestly, whatever keeps you from losing your mind is the right system. There’s no one-size-fits-all with this stuff.

Keeping Track of Renovation Plans Without Losing Your Mind

My camera roll is basically a time capsule of half-finished ideas and “maybe someday” projects. I once found a photo of a faucet I liked, but had zero memory of where I saw it or why I thought it was a good fit for the bathroom. It’s like my phone is trying to gaslight me.

I tried the folder thing too, but then I’d end up with “Kitchen Reno,” “Kitchen Stuff,” and “Kitchen Ideas” all sitting next to each other, and I’d have to open each one to figure out what was actually inside. Not exactly efficient. The notes app trick is a step up, though. I started using it after I lost a sticky note with all my tile measurements—never again. Now I just snap a pic, jot down the measurements right there, and at least I know where to look when I’m standing in the hardware store, panicking.

Receipts are a whole other beast. I used to keep them in a shoebox, but then the box became a black hole. Now I just take photos and hope for the best. It’s not perfect, but at least I’m not digging through crumpled paper when I need to return something.

Honestly, I think half the battle is just accepting that it’s going to be a little messy. I’ve seen people with color-coded spreadsheets and Pinterest boards for every room, but that’s just not me. If I can find the paint color and remember which wall it’s for, I call that a win.

I totally relate to the receipt chaos—mine used to end up as bookmarks or just crumpled in jacket pockets. Have you tried using a project management app? I know it sounds a bit much, but I started using Trello to make boards for each room, and it’s surprisingly flexible. You can attach photos, jot notes, and even tag stuff with colors if you’re feeling ambitious. It keeps things in one place without forcing you into rigid folders. Plus, it’s paperless, so less waste floating around. Not perfect, but it’s helped me keep track of which eco-friendly paint sample I actually liked... instead of guessing at the hardware store.

Trello, huh? I tried that once, but then I got distracted making color-coded labels for “urgent” and “maybe someday” and forgot what I was supposed to be organizing. My receipts are still hiding in weird places—found one in the freezer last week (don’t ask). I have a whiteboard now, but honestly, half the time I just doodle potential tile patterns on it instead of writing useful notes. Maybe one day I’ll find a system that sticks... or at least remember which lightbulbs I actually need.

I get it—Trello’s supposed to make things easier, but I end up spending more time tweaking the board than actually getting stuff done. I tried sticky notes for a while, but then my cat decided they were toys. Ever tried just snapping pics of receipts and dumping them in a folder on your phone? Not perfect, but at least they don’t end up in the freezer. As for lightbulbs, I just write the wattage on the fixture with a Sharpie... not pretty, but it works. How do you keep track of all the eco-friendly options out there without losing your mind?
