RE: how often do you actually clean and sharpen your tools?
Glue cleanup and sharpening are separate jobs. For anyone who finds a scraper smearing adhesive, clean the residue off promptly with a suitable solvent or other appropriate method rather than waiting for the next sharpen...
RE: WHEN THE LIGHTS GO OUT MID-PROJECT: WHAT'S YOUR MOVE?
I get the temptation to just keep rolling when you’re in the zone, but I’ve learned the hard way that “touching it up later” can turn into a whole new headache - especially in these old houses where nothing’s square and ...
RE: What would you do if your kitchen reno budget doubled overnight?
Funny, I had the same debate during our last reno. Couldn’t agree more. I tried open shelves in my 1920s place - looked great for about a week, then the dust and cat hair took over. Glass fronts are the sweet spot. If y...
RE: How to spot if your home is actually quake-ready
Title: How to spot if your home is actually quake-ready I get where you’re coming from, but I’ve got to admit, I’m a bit wary of trusting patch jobs, even the good ones. Maybe it’s just from living in a house that’s see...
RE: Why does load distribution always trip me up?
Had the same thing happen when I moved my old upright piano into the parlor - sounded like a herd of elephants every time someone walked by. Turns out, those “beefy” joists from 1910 weren’t meant for modern furniture. E...
RE: plumbing check-up dilemma: DIY or hire a pro?
I get where you’re coming from. I’ve got a house built in the 1920s, and honestly, most of my plumbing “inspections” are just me poking around with a flashlight and sniffing for trouble. Like you said, Couldn’t agree mo...
RE: Keeping string lights dry: worth the hassle?
Tried to get clever once and hid the outlet behind a planter - looked fine until the first big rain. Water pooled right in, tripped the GFCI, and I spent half a day figuring out why the fridge in the mudroom was off. At ...
RE: Need ideas for draining my pool without flooding the yard
I’ve done the slow-drain method before and it really does help - especially with older yards that don’t have the best drainage. Moving the hose around is key. Like you said, That’s pretty much what I do every spring. I’...
RE: Natural cleaners vs store-bought stuff for appliances
Sticky oven knobs are the bane of my existence, honestly. I’ve got a 1920s stove and those things seem to attract grime like nothing else. I used to be all about the natural stuff - vinegar, baking soda, lemon juice, you...
RE: Easy ways to refresh your porch look each season
I’ve got a 1920s porch and those adhesive strips just don’t cut it here - humidity and old wood seem to eat them alive. I tried hanging a string of lights last fall and half of them ended up on the ground after a rainsto...
RE: What if you had to redecorate your living room every season?
I dunno, I live in an old historic house and changing decor every season sounds exhausting... I tried putting up holiday lights once and discovered the walls crumble if you even sneeze near them. I'll stick to my dusty b...
RE: Natural cleaners vs store-bought stuff for appliances
Same here, learned the vinegar lesson the hard way on my marble counters... ouch. Now I stick to dish soap and water for stone. But baking soda paste saved my vintage stove - nothing else worked on those ancient grease s...
RE: EARTHQUAKE-PROOFED MY FIRST BUILDING AND IT ACTUALLY WORKED
Yeah, those zipper sheets seemed genius at first, but the dust drove me nuts too. Reinforcing old Victorians is no joke - I leaned heavily on local codes and a buddy who's an engineer. FEMA's stuff was decent, but nothin...
RE: plumbing check-up dilemma: DIY or hire a pro?
I get your point, but honestly, living in an older home has taught me that sometimes you just gotta dive in deeper than you'd like. I've had plumbers come out for what I thought were minor issues, only to discover outdat...
RE: Finally Got My Dream Closet Sorted
Nicely done! Built-ins are a game changer, especially when you have older homes like mine where nothing is ever straight or level. Last summer I decided to tackle a similar project - converting an awkward nook in our 192...
