RE: How do you keep insulation effective without choking off soffit airflow?
In a cold climate, the choice also depends on how the assembly controls condensation. If insulation would leave the roof sheathing cold while indoor moisture can reach it, a vented channel may help carry moisture away. A...
RE: Why do built-in benches always look better than they feel?
I’ve always wondered if the “look” of built-ins just wins out over comfort in most designs. In my 1920s house, the original breakfast nook benches are charming, but honestly, they’re not exactly inviting for long meals. ...
RE: Delayed payments driving me nuts - does this ever get easier?
That’s the hardest part, honestly. I’ve had similar issues - sometimes it feels like you’re the only one who remembers the agreement. Written records help, but even then, it can get awkward. I try to remind myself it’s o...
RE: Why do built-in benches always look better than they feel?
I’ve actually wrestled with this a bit in my own place - our house is from the 1920s and has a breakfast nook with a built-in bench that looks charming but feels like sitting on a church pew during a long sermon. I’ve wo...
RE: How Long Does It Really Take To Insulate A House?
That’s interesting about the foam gaskets - I’ve always wondered how much of a difference those little steps really make in older houses with plaster walls. Has anyone tried using caulk or weatherstripping on original wo...
RE: Subway tiles vs. hexagon tiles in the bathroom - what’s your pick?
We went with white grout in our 1920s bathroom and, honestly, it’s been a mixed bag. It looked amazing for the first few months, but even with sealing, it’s a magnet for stains - especially around the tub where the kids ...
RE: Keeping Wood Floors in the Kitchen Looking Sharp
I’ve actually had the opposite experience with plant-based waxes and oil finishes - sometimes I’ll get a bit of streaking or patchiness, especially in high-traffic spots near the sink. Maybe it’s just my old oak floors b...
RE: Why Does Running Power to a Detached Garage Feel So Complicated?
That’s interesting to hear, and I can see why you’d recommend going higher on amperage. I’m dealing with a house from the 1920s, so I tend to be a bit conservative about what I add, just trying not to overwhelm the old w...
RE: Brightening up a room: led strips vs. smart bulbs?
I’ve run into that too - what’s labeled “warm white” in one fixture can look totally off in another, especially in older rooms with wood trim. I once swapped out a strip that was supposed to be 2700K, but it looked almos...
RE: Keeping hardwood shiny without losing my mind
I hear you on the full-gloss regret. I tried it once in my old Victorian, thinking it’d look grand, but all it did was highlight every single scratch and dust bunny. Satin’s been my go-to ever since - just enough sheen t...
RE: Natural cleaners vs store-bought stuff for appliances
I’ve had the same issue - especially with old ovens in my place. Enzyme sprays do seem to help a bit more than the basic “green” stuff, but they’re not magic. You still have to let them sit for a while, and sometimes a s...
RE: Finally got my outdoor space looking cozy and inviting
I've always wondered about sand for drainage too. From what I've read, sand can help a bit, but it really depends on your soil type. If you've got heavy clay, sand might actually make things worse by creating a sort of c...
RE: Sneaky ways to brighten your space without flipping the switch
I've definitely run into that issue with preservation guidelines myself. Our local historic district is pretty particular about window treatments, especially if the windows are original or historically significant. I fou...
RE: Finally switched to keyless entry and here's what I noticed
Had the same issue with humidity causing sticking... Have you considered applying a thin coat of beeswax or paraffin to the bolt and strike plate? Worked surprisingly well for me without sanding down original woodwork.
RE: Just hit 20 years with the same HVAC - am I just lucky?
I've noticed something similar with my own historic home. My HVAC is pushing 25 years now, and honestly, I thought I'd have replaced it ages ago. But after some digging around (literally and figuratively), I realized the...
