Future-Proofing Is Great, But Sometimes Less Is More

I get the appeal of running a big conduit and maxing out the panel—future-proofing is smart, especially if you’re thinking about resale or just want to avoid headaches down the line. But I’ve actually found that sometimes, going all-in on capacity can be overkill, especially if you’re not 100% sure what the next owner (or even you, five years from now) will actually need.

Here’s a step-by-step I’ve used a few times that’s worked out well, especially for detached garages that might not ever see heavy industrial use:

1. **Assess Actual Needs**: Before trenching or running conduit, I’ll sit down and make a list of what’s *really* going to be plugged in. A kiln is a big draw, sure, but if it’s only used occasionally, maybe you don’t need to size everything for simultaneous use.

2. **Consider Dedicated Circuits**: Instead of one massive feed, sometimes it makes sense to run a couple of smaller circuits—one for heavy stuff (like the kiln), another for lights and outlets. That way, you’re not paying for oversized wire and breakers you might never use.

3. **Think About Flexibility**: I’ve seen folks run conduit with a pull string and leave it empty, just in case. That way, if you ever *do* need more power, you can pull new wire without digging up the yard again.

4. **Aesthetics vs. Function**: Hiding everything is great, but sometimes a little exposed conduit (painted to match) isn’t the end of the world, especially if it saves you thousands on labor or materials.

5. **Permits and Inspections**: This is where things get complicated fast. Every city’s different, but I’ve had projects stall for months because the inspector wanted something done a certain way that wasn’t in the original plan. Sometimes simpler is better just to keep things moving.

I get wanting to do it once and never think about it again, but I’ve also seen people spend a ton on “future-proofing” only to sell the place to someone who just parks their car and stores Christmas decorations in the garage. Just my two cents—sometimes less is more, especially if you’re not running a full-on workshop out there.

I get where you’re coming from, but honestly, I’d rather overdo it a little than get stuck later. I did the “just what I need now” approach in my last place and regretted it when I wanted to add a welder. The resale argument’s fair, but I think a lot of buyers appreciate seeing a garage that’s actually ready for anything.

Like you said,

Thing is, if you ever want to use two big tools at once, or someone else does down the line, suddenly you’re wishing you just ran the bigger conduit while the trench was open.

Permits are always a pain either way… just my two cents.

Totally get the logic behind future-proofing. I’ve seen plenty of buyers light up when they see a garage that’s already set up for big tools or even EV charging, so I think you’re onto something with resale value. Still, I always wonder where the line is between “ready for anything” and overkill. Like, how much extra capacity actually gets used by most folks? I’ve walked properties where the electrical was way overbuilt and never touched, but I’ve also seen people regret not going bigger. Permits are a headache, but at least if you do it right the first time, you won’t have to dig up the yard twice...

That’s the million-dollar question, right? I’ve definitely seen garages wired up like a small factory, and the new owners just use it for a fridge and a leaf blower. My rule of thumb: plan for what you’ll actually use in the next 5-10 years, then add a little wiggle room. EV charging? Sure. Full woodworking shop? Only if you’re really into it. Otherwise, you’re just paying extra for copper you’ll never need. And yeah, permits are a pain, but digging up concrete twice is way worse... trust me, I’ve learned that one the hard way.

I get where you’re coming from, but I actually lean the other way—maybe it’s living in an old house where nothing is ever quite “enough.” I’ve lost count of how many times I thought, “I’ll never need more than this,” and then a few years later I’m wishing I’d just run a bigger conduit or added a couple extra circuits. Sure, you don’t want to go nuts, but a little overkill can save a ton of headaches down the road, especially if your needs change or you get bitten by the DIY bug. Just my two cents...
