Had ants invade my planter boxes too, and mesh screens definitely helped. A couple other things that worked for me:

- Sprinkled cinnamon around the base - ants hate the stuff, and it's cheap.
- Raised the boxes slightly off the ground with bricks to improve airflow and discourage pests.
- Occasionally poured diluted vinegar around the area; seemed to keep them away without harming plants.

Not foolproof, but these small tweaks made a noticeable difference without breaking the bank.

Cinnamon worked pretty well for me too, though it washed away quickly after rain. Another cheap trick I tried was coffee grounds - ants seemed to steer clear, and my plants didn't mind the extra nutrients. Raising the boxes definitely helps with airflow; plus, it just looks cleaner visually. Small adjustments like these make a bigger difference than people realize...especially when you're trying to keep a cozy vibe without overspending.

Coffee grounds are a great tip - I've recommended them to clients before, and they usually love the results. Have you tried mixing in some crushed eggshells too? Adds calcium for the plants and seems to deter slugs pretty well...might be worth a shot.

Coffee grounds and eggshells sound great in theory, but honestly, I've had mixed results. Last summer, I tried the eggshell trick in my garden beds - my slugs must've been wearing hiking boots because they marched right over them. Instead, copper tape around pots or raised beds worked wonders for me. A bit pricier upfront, sure, but it's reusable and less messy than crushed shells everywhere...plus, fewer weird looks from neighbors wondering why my flowerbeds look like breakfast leftovers.

Has copper tape really worked that well for you? I've heard mixed things - some folks swear by it, but others say their slugs just crawl right over. Maybe it depends on the tape quality or placement? I've actually had decent luck with beer traps myself. Sure, they're a bit messy and you have to empty them out regularly, but at least my neighbors don't think I'm serving breakfast in my garden beds...
